A Baltic (post?) folk evening with Ilga Reizniece in Luxembourg city

The Espace Royal Monterey of BGL BNP Paribas held last night a free concert for the Latvian Community who lives and works in Luxembourg.
According to the initiator of the event, M. Jean-Claude Schleich, Head of Commercial Affairs for retail banking, in excess 160 Latvians and their Honorary Consul Mr. Henri Diederich, attended the rock folk concert given by the Iļģi ensemble. As Mr. Schleich explained, this group forms an integral part of world music. Their Ne uz vienu dienu song (Not for One Day) was voted the 2nd best European world music recording by the experts of World Music Charts Europe (WMCE) and stayed in the top ten for four months in 2006.
The Iļģi ensemble was formed in 1981 by violonist Ilga Reizniece who played classical Latvian folk music. She was soon to be joined by Māris Muktupāvels, the piper and kokle player. They visited remote parts of Latvia in search for unrecorded folk songs, studied the traditional dance, as well as sewed their own traditional costumes and build their own instruments. In the early nineties, Ilga felt that she had to fulfill her mission in preserving the Latvian heritage so searched for new means of expression in music which led to recruiting new members in the group: Egons Kronbergs at the guitar, Gatis Gaujenieks at the bass and Vilnis Strods at the drums.
At a time when Europe’s traditional folklore is slowly dying, this was a truly daring initiative from the organizers and an absolute fun night for the children and parents alike.
