Riga, the Hidden Gem of Europe

If you are at odds about what to do this summer, then visiting Latvia may be an option. Riga, the capital of Latvia is a European Capital of Culture 2014. Riga is also listed by UNESCO as one of the most important cultural and architectural sites in the world. You may find a diversity of architectures including art nouveau intricacies, Soviet functionalism, baroque style buildings such as the newly refurbished Rundale Palace. Riga’s houses include wooden houses (many 19th century), glass houses and the newly built skyscrapers. The must be seen buildings include Riga’s Cathedral, St Peter’s Church and the Riga Castle, to name a few…
I was lucky to be in Riga on the 6th July and have seats for the stunning ‘Born in Riga’ open-air concert which was broadcasted live in several European countries. This was held in the grounds of the Latvian National Opera and the stage was specially constructed for the occasion. The concert featured classical music stars who were born in Riga. For those who were not there, not all is missed however: the World Choir Games are currently taking place where 20,000 singers from 480 choirs in 60 countries and the five continents are performing across the capital! Other forms of arts are well celebrated in Riga and bookworms will be delighted to discover the stunning new National Library of Latvia where literature and book making is celebrated though an exhibition of printed books from the 1500.

For nature lovers and families you may want to visit this summer the Daugavgriva Nature Reserve, the Island of Love, Vakarbulli and Daugavgriva beaches with their attractions and playgrounds, and its lighthouse. If you have a bit more time, the 19th century historical wooden buildings in Boleraja are definitely worth the detour.
